Cooking Confidence: Carolina’s Story

When Carolina started at her new school in Camden, she was shy and overwhelmed. Carolina's discomfort at her new school even extended to mealtimes. She didn't eat breakfast or lunch at school.

Even in her first Vetri Cooking Lab class, she stayed on the sidelines.

But by the end of the semester, she was cooking and eating the meals she helped prepare—finding confidence, connection, and even improving in math!

"Cooking club has given her a sense of belonging among a smaller, supportive group of her peers. Her math proficiency has even doubled!" says her teacher, Ms. Ramirez.

For students across Philadelphia, Vetri Cooking Lab is more than just a place to learn nutritious recipes—it’s a space where kids discover new skills, apply classroom knowledge in real-life situations, and build confidence through cooking and sharing a meal together.

At Eugenio Maria de Hostos Charter School, Logan, a student who sometimes struggles with focus, found his moment to shine. When oat flour went flying, he engineered a simple but brilliant fix—turning a paper plate into a blender shield! Cooking isn’t just about food; it’s about problem-solving, teamwork, and building life skills.

We’re hosting our first ever fundraising cooking

We’re hosting our first ever fundraising cooking class for families, and you’re invited!

On Saturday April 26, join Scott Noye AKA Chef Dad of @chefdadstable in the Teaching Kitchen for a lunchtime cooking class for families.

Together, Chef Scott will teach you how to make Macaroni & Cheese, Honey-Glazed Carrots with Rosemary, and Edible Cookie Dough. Then, we’ll all enjoy a family-style meal together in the Teaching Kitchen!

Tickets are $100 and include a cooking class for one adult and one child. An additional child is $10 and an additional adult is $25. All funds raised go directly to Vetri Community Partnership’s mission to nourish minds, bodies, and communities with nutrition education through cooking. Grab your ticket today, link in bio!

A gift of $25 a month can give 20 people a free cooking class at Vetri Community Partnership. Join the Spice Cabinet today and give the gift of nutrition education all year long.

Last fall, in the Cooking for Heart Health series, a dozen people joined Vetri Community Partnership in a four-part series on how to cook and eat to support your cardiovascular health.

For Deborah, the class was a game-changer.

"I learned how to make my cooking taste good without adding lots of extra salt," she told us. "You can use things like herbs and vinegar which add flavor without increasing salt."

"The meals that they helped us prepare were very beneficial for my diabetes diagnosis—low sugar, high fiber—and the recipes were quick but still healthy," said Deressa, another Cooking for Heart Health participant.
