New to Camden and her school, Carolina was scared and uncertain about her new environment. Even her first day in Vetri Cooking Lab was overwhelming for her—she spent most of that first session coloring and did not partake in cooking. Carolina’s discomfort at her new school even extended to mealtimes. She didn’t eat breakfast or lunch at school.
Ms. Ramirez, a teacher at the school, made our educator, Megan, aware of Carolina’s food challenges, and asked to stay updated on whether Carolina ate anything at “Cooking Club.” By the end of last fall’s Vetri Cooking Lab semester, Megan was proud to report that Carolina was indeed eating the meals that she was helping prepare.
“This semester, I’ve definitely noticed her confidence has increased,” Ms. Ramirez says. “She speaks and participates a lot more in class. I credit a lot of this to cooking club. Vetri Cooking Lab has given her a sense of belonging among a smaller, supportive group of her peers. Her math proficiency has even doubled!”
Vetri Cooking Lab is more than just an after-school cooking program. It is an opportunity for kids to fosters a sense of belonging and confidence that can change their lives through cooking and enjoying nutritious, delicious food!
