Today wraps up National Nutrition Month! We covered a wide variety of nutrition topics this month, including protein, electrolytes, and the topic everyone’s talking about–eggs!

Protein

Protein and getting enough of it can feel complicated, but it doesn’t have to! Protein helps us build muscle and have overall good body function. How much you should get depends on you, your age, and your lifestyle. Everybody is different! Your goal should be to get protein as often as you can–at every meal if possible. You might know about sources of animal protein, like beef, chicken, and fish, but did you know that lots of plants also have protein? Foods like beans and lentils are packed with protein. Try our Lentil Mushroom Bolognese or Pasta e Ceci to get some great plant-based protein in your diet.

Eggs

You might be hearing a lot about eggs these days, and there’s a good reason. Eggs are great! They’re packed with vitamins, minerals, and protein. They can be part of any nutritious diet as long as we’re having them in a balanced way. We recommend pairing eggs with foods that are higher in fiber, like fruits, veggies, and whole grains. Do eggs have “too much cholesterol” in them? Not really! Eggs do have cholesterol in them, so if you’re dealing with high cholesterol, we recommend consulting a physician and a dietitian who can help determine the right amount of eggs for you. We have tons of great egg recipes on our website, like this Shakshuka.

Electrolytes

Electrolytes are a combination of many different minerals that our body needs, like magnesium, sodium, and potassium.  In most electrolyte beverages, there is a lot of added sugar and sodium. Instead, consider adding more colorful fruits and veggies to your meals, which have these same minerals without added sodium. Consider making a Pineapple Agua Fresca which is a flavorful beverage that has tons of vitamins and minerals while also limiting added sugar and salt.

We hope everyone enjoyed National Nutrition Month and took the opportunity to add more fruits, veggies, and whole grains to their plates. Nutrition Month can be every month!
