Vetri Community Partnership hosted New York Times food reporter and bestselling cookbook author, Priya Krishna, at their Teaching Kitchen on October 20, 2024. As a part of Cookbooks and Convos, an event series hosted by Ellen Yin’s Sisterly Love Collective, the event featured Priya cooking with nine Philadelphia-area students who participate in Vetri Community Partnership’s free nutrition education and cooking programs.
In April of 2024, Priya wrote a cookbook specifically for kids. “Since the release of Priya’s Kitchen Adventures, we’ve been eager to get Priya to Philadelphia to meet and cook with some of our students,” says Maddy Booth, CEO of Vetri Community Partnership. “To give the students we serve an opportunity to learn from someone of Priya’s caliber, someone who understands why it’s important for kids to learn to cook, is an immense honor and privilege.”
This event is rooted in Vetri Community Partnership’s mission to nourish minds, bodies, and communities with nutrition education through cooking with an emphasis on showcasing the kitchen skills that students have learned while attending some of our programs. Nine students joined Priya and Vetri Community Partnership in the Teaching Kitchen to prepare Curry Chana from Trinidad and Tobago, a recipe inspired by Priya’s travels and published in her new cookbook. Each student received a signed copy of Priya’s Kitchen Adventures and got to cook and eat with Priya. “I’m very, very excited to spend time with the next generation of brilliant home cooks in support of such a community oriented initiative!” Priya Krishna said.
A total of 30 guests joined to watch the event, including Moya Hall, a parent of a participating child. “This was a really special experience for my son, who goes to the Community Cooking Nights at Vetri Community Partnership,” Moya said. “It means so much to us that Priya came to see what Philly kids are made of.”
